ABOUT POSTNATAL DEPRESSION Any new mother can get PND, but some new mothers are more likely to get it than others. New mothers who are at greater-than-average risk of developing PND are those who: have a family history of psychiatric problems (depression, anxiety, etc.); have a personal history of psychiatric problems; were physically, emotionally or sexually abused during childhood; have had PND previously; have difficult relationships with partner or family-members; have recently experienced a stressful life event (the death of a loved one, a life-threatening illness in the family, a house move, etc.); receive little support from family-members or friends; have experienced a traumatic childbirth (an emergency caesarean, obstetric complications, premature delivery, etc.); are sensitive to post-delivery changes in pregnancy hormone levels; or are caring for a ‘difficult’ baby. |
